I was appointed at the School of Chemistry in 2009 and began managing the Electrochemistry and Biosensors Group. Since 2009 I have quadrupled the size of that group and converted it to the Applied Research in Chemistry and Health team. I now manage a large number of students and place a strong emphasis on challenging them as well as supporting them. I have supervised 11 Ph.Ds. and 11 M.Scs. students to completion.
The strategy for my research is firmly centred on high-value research at the interface of biology and chemistry which has afforded me a strong track record of working with both industry and academia. Thus far I have filed 11 patents, secured £4.6M in funding (81% as PI with a 52% success rate), established the School of Chemistry’s first category II safe laboratory and am responsible for health and safety within the School.
My extensive industrial links have helped with the consideration of the commercial consequence and direction of the research that my team carries out. In essence, the network has been established without relinquishing the scientific lead and this coupled with my team’s support has enabled me to:
- Appointed 18 members of staff to meet the outcomes of the grants and sustained their employment either within or outside of my team
- Utilised the IP to formed a spinout company which has attracted prestigious High Potential Starts support and is now part of the Accelerated Growth Program
- Serve on a World Health Organisation international sensors steering group
- Gain support for our research from the UNICEF/UNDP/World Bank/WHO Special Programme for Research and Training on Tropical Diseases
- Establish the first and only category II laboratories within the School of Chemistry
- Established the first and only cell culture laboratory within the School of Chemistry
- Produced multiple press releases including the BBC
- Become a grant reviewer for the European & Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership and the Medical Research Council
- Organised a Royal Society of Chemistry conference on TB diagnostics in Bangor as well as five other fully funded multidisciplinary conferences including a recent biosensors workshop
